John is a candidate for the IUCN Council, representing North America and the Caribbean.

John Tobin-de la Puente

If you represent a member organization of IUCN, I want you to know that, if elected, I intend to deploy all of my accumulated experience, energy, and knowledge for the benefit of IUCN and its members.

I believe that I am in a unique position to contribute to the IUCN Council, given my personal and professional background and my 25-year experience in the governance of conservation, scientific, and educational organizations. I am committed to being an effective advocate for member organizations in North America and the Caribbean region, as well as other member organizations far beyond the region.

I am a biologist, a lawyer, and a lifelong defender of the living world. I am also former Chair of the Board of Directors of IUCN-US. Currently, I am based at Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, USA, where I am Professor of Practice in the SC Johnson College of Business. My teaching, research, and outreach activities focus on environmental finance and business, with a focus on biodiversity. I am also a Senior Fellow in the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability.
